History of Dadra and Nagar Haveli:-

The history of Dadra and Nagar Haveli begins with the defeat of the Koli chieftains by the invading Rajput kings. In the middle of the 18th century, the Marathas defeated the Rajputs and established their power. After a protracted conflict between the Marathas and the Portuguese in December 1779, the Maratha Peshwa Madhavrao II handed over 79 villages in the region to the Portuguese as a revenue compensation of Rs 12000.

The Portuguese ruled the region until liberation on 2 August 1954. From 1954 to 1961, the state functioned almost independently, administered by the 'Independent Dadra and Nagar Haveli Administration'. But on 11 August 1961, the state joined the Indian Union and since then the Government of India has recognized it as a Union Territory.

The 'Senior Panchayat' functioned as an advisory body to the administration after the independence of the region from Portuguese rule but it was dissolved in 1989 and as per the all-India constitutional amendment Dadra and Nagar Haveli Zilla Panchayats &c. A State Council of 11 Gram Panchayats was constituted.
