Konark is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Odisha. It was built by King Narasimhadeva I in the 13th century (1238–1264). It represents the grandeur, architecture, strength and stability of the Ganga dynasty as well as the historical setting.

The temple is built in the shape of a huge chariot. It is dedicated to Sun God. In this sense, it is directly associated with the materialistic Brahmanism and Tantric belief systems.

The temples of Konark are known not only for their architectural grandeur but also for the depth and proficiency of the sculpture work.

Some people are of the opinion that the 24 wheels symbolize the 24 hours of the day, while others say that the two rows of 12 horses represent the 12 months of the year. Seven horses are considered to be the symbol of the seven days of the week.
It was once called the 'Black Pagoda' by seafarers, as it was believed to attract ships to shore and destroy them.

Konark is an invaluable link to the history of the spread of the 'Sun cult', which originated in Kashmir during the 8th century, eventually reaching the shores of eastern India.

"Konark Surya Mandir"  (Sun Temple)

The technical meaning of Surya Mandir, "Konark Surya Mandir," is "Sun Temple" from the Chariot of the Sun God. Konark Mandir is a Hindu temple constructed in the form of a distinctive metal chariot. The temple is renowned for its finely created idols and has been included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Konark Temple Festival is an important festival in Odisha following the date of the construction of the Konark Sun Temple. In the spirit of this period, there is a place for instrumental activities of song performance, using automated instruments.
